August 12, 2015 - Around 1:00pm Eastern Standard Time today, a series of explosions occurred at the container port in Tianjin, China.

The explosions could be felt up to 10 kilometers away. Electric power and streets are sealed off by the authorities. The fire is currently “under control” according to the state news agency in Xinhua.

The cause is not confirmed at this time, however, it is common that vessel fuel, chemicals, and other flammable materials in transit are stored at the port.

Tianjin is the 10th largest volume port in the world, the largest port in Northern China, and the main maritime gateway to Beijing. Tianjin city is an industrial area located southeast of the Chinese capital of Beijing, and home to 7.5 million people.

Please be assured that AIReS is communicating with local authorities and partners to obtain the impact on shipment movement in and out of Tianjin port, and will report the facts as they become available.
