February 17, 2015 - West Coast Port delays have hit crisis levels after a 4-day work stoppage from Thursday, February 12th through the 16th.

At last count, 21 container ships are currently sitting off the coastal port of Los Angeles/Long Beach due to congestion. Steamship lines have detoured vessels to Oakland, Seattle, Tacoma, and Vancouver, all of which are sitting off-shore also awaiting their turn at port.

Cargo delays mount as options diminish to reroute goods to other ports. With many vessels trying to route goods via Canada to the US, the Canadian Pacific Railway unions are also considering potential work stoppage or delays.

While the PMA and International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) continue to fight over contract terms, vessels wait off-shore, goods stack to capacity at ports, rail yards back up with containers awaiting export, and businesses struggle with goods arriving too late to meet market deadlines. Some do not arrive at all.

Please be assured that AIReS is monitoring the situation closely and will advise any changes. If you have any questions, please contact your AIReS representative.
