Brexit Update, Monday, April 1, 2019

Written by Aires Authors | Apr 1, 2019 6:56:00 AM

Last week, the United Kingdom (UK) Parliament once again dismissed a most recent Withdrawal Agreement presented by Prime Minister Theresa May. As a result, the European Union (EU) has temporarily suspended Brexit from March 29, 2019 to April 12, 2019. The EU would have allowed an extension until May 22, 2019 had the Agreement been ratified by the UK Parliament, but this did not occur and therefore the new Brexit date is slated for less than two weeks away.

Over the course of the next two weeks, the UK Parliament will continue to try to find alternative withdrawal plans that could earn the support of the majority and be brought to the EU for consideration. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, has indicated he will call a European Council summit on April 10 - so it is widely expected that the UK must present a deal by this date.

With a state of uncertainty still prevalent, employers should continue to plan for a no-deal Brexit to occur on April 12, 2019.
